THE GALLIARD ENSEMBLE
Opening our new season we present this outstanding Wind Ensemble,former BBC New Generation Artists and now in its 25th year, having appeared at many major events at venues such as The Wigmore Hall, South Bank Centre, The Bridgewater Hall and the BBC Proms. They are bringing a fascinating programme ranging from Quintets by Mozart & Briccialdi (of “Carnival of Venice” fame) to the music of Jim Parker – his “Mississippi Five” – which recalls the history of New Orleans jazz. In between we shall hear pieces by Percy Grainger and Darius Milhaud. Safe to say something for everyone!

A face familiar to our audience is that of SIMON CALLAGHAN (piano) who joins KAREL BREDENHORST (cello) to form this duo having met in 2013 and now give regular recitals on the continent and the UK. Karel studied in Holland and as a recitalist and chamber musician performs at festivals in the UK and across Europe, the USA and South America. Tonight, together Duo Verzaro will perform major cello sonatas by Beethoven and Frank Bridge and shorter works by Schumann, Tchaikovsky, and Mendelssohn. “primordial musicality and a flawless technique” – review of recent CD .

TIM HORTON (PIANO)
Tim Horton is one of the leading chamber pianists of his generation. He is probably best known in our part of the world as one of the founders of Ensemble 360 based in Sheffield and with whom he regularly appears. In recent years he has been gaining a reputation as a solo pianist and has appeared with the CBSO with Sir Simon Rattle and with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Tonight he will devote the first part of his recital to the music of Chopin featuring Barcarolles, Ballades and Waltzes. The second half features the wonderful A Major Sonata of Franz Schubert.

THE SOLEM QUARTET
Members will remember this quartet from a couple of years ago when they opened our season at such very short notice and made such an impression on the audience we are pleased to have them back. The music of Bartok which was so thrilling last time will again feature with his 4th Quartet following the Haydn Quartet No 53. The great A Minor Quartet of Brahms completes what promises to be a memorable evening.

ANNA CAVALIERO (SOPRANO)
NATALIE BURCH (PIANO)
Anna is a young British-Hungarian singer who completed her studies at the Universitat Mozartium, Salzburg where she worked with Barbara Bonney. She holds an MPerf (with distinction) from the Royal College of Music and an MA in English Literature from Cambridge University. Anna is active on the Live Music Now scheme with her duo partner Natalie Burch. Natalie was a finalist at the 2017 Kathleen Ferrier Awards and is a 2018 Britten-Pears and Leeds Lieder Young Artist. An evening of song under the title “Spirits of Love” will feature music by Schubert, Schumann, Korngold and others.

For our final concert this season we are delighted to welcome a quartet of musicians from the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. All aged 25 and under these players offer a high quality and fun introduction to jazz and are keen to present workshops on the fundamentals of jazz performance to local and up and coming musicians. An entertaining evening in prospect under the title “Legends of Jazz” which features the music of Duke Ellington, Herbie Hancock, Thelonius Monk and others.
